I have no energy.

Yep…this is what I say on the days when my self-care goes out the window. We all know drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, eating the colors of the rainbow daily, taking our vitamins and working out is key to feeling good. But what about the other habits ingrained in our every day that ultimately sabotage our wellness. Some are less obvious and even hidden deep in our subconscious. We are not even aware that we are draining our own energy. Here are five ways we can avoid these energy suckers and increase our energy and rock our world every day.

# 1 Alarming Start to the Day

Most of us have an “alarm” to wake us every morning.  Have you considered the word “alarm”? Imagine that our first waking moments consist of being jolted out of slumber into a stress state. Some of us have our alarm clock tuned to an AM station where the latest “bad” news is  the first thing to fuel our minds and our spirit. Or if you are like me I used to have the default alarm that sounded more like a fire-drill.  What if were to wake to the sounds of a recorded birds chirping or zen-like chants. There are dozens of free smart phone apps you can download to get you started on the right “note”  Be sure to keep your phone charging overnight as far away from your bed as possible to avoid unhealthy side effects from the radiation and wavelengths electronic devices can omit. If you do not want to turn off the cell phone at night, at least try to turn off the internet connection. Even better, work on perfecting your natural circadian rhythm. Get to bed early, take the pure and safe pharmaceutical grade Melatonin that I take to help regulate and increase your sleep hormone.

#2 The Comparison Game

Speaking of cell phones, we have become increasingly addicted to our phones and most of us reach for it first thing in the morning  to check out our Facebook and Instagram accounts. This is a sure way to sap our energy and joy. Studies show that social media can sometimes lead to more unhappiness. As we scroll through our Facebook and Instagram some of us have a tendency to compare our lives to others. Does this sound familiar?  I know I have felt this way at times. I check in with myself and make certain I don’t start my day looking at my phone. One tip I learned is to be sure to have my phone on airplane mode to avoid checking my emails and social media accounts the moment I wake.

#3 The Bookends of Your Day

The way we start our day will set up us for success and more joy. The way we end our day is important too!  I call these my daily bookends. Before setting my feet on the floor, I list three things I am grateful for and set a clear intention for the day. Instead of rehearsing the to do list in my mind or checking Facebook,  I ask the question…who am I meant to serve today? How will I make an impact and what will I create today. This sets the tone for the rest of the day.   Spend as much time the evening before, planning  what you will do to feel inspired the next  morning. Perhaps you can meditate or read affirmations out loud, listen to your favourite song or do some stretching. Whatever you do , hold off on your to do list. Don’t forget to factor in some extra time for this ultimate gift to yourself.

#4 Positive Attracts Positive

What we feed our minds is equally as important as what we feed our bodies. And who we hang out with is just as important. We are  energy and energy, good or bad,  is contagious! Whether it’s the Facebook group you are a member of, a friend  who calls you when they need a listening ear, or who you invite to your place for a BBQ, be mindful of those who suck your energy. Author of Positive Energy Judith Orloff calls them Energy Vampires. Check out her book Here.

#5 Fuel For the Car

What do cars have to do with this you ask? It’s a simple concept but one worth applying to our own lives when it comes to feeding our bodies. We need fuel  for our set of wheels to work properly and regular maintenance ensures a long life. Yet we don’t always  meet our nutritional needs for our own health. The right fuel for the body converts to ENERGY!   Pay attention to how you feel when you eat certain foods. Less added sugar and more real food from the earth is the way to go.  Keep blood sugars level by not eating processed carbs and limit anything white. The mid afternoon slumps will disappear and you will feel more alive and have more energy.  We are made up of trillions of cells and must feed those cells with the proper nutrients. Busy lives means less time to focus on optimal nutrition so we can kick butt!
